Perhaps this is because organizations tend to operate in competition: "I don't want to tell you what I'm doing because then you might steal it."
This may not be terribly prevalent in academic circles, but in the business world competition and corporate secrecy are de rigeur.
Or maybe designers are just plain lazy, or they have hubris enough to think that they have a complete (or at least sufficient) view of the subject matter.
Most likely the largest constraint is budgetary. Travel may be broadening, but it's darned expensive.
