Although this question might seem trivial, someone (the animator/designer) has to make the decision or at least be given the initial direction. Questions like this one have caused many problems with design teams when trying to visualize the abstract or even the concrete for video, animations, graphic illustrations, etc. Two or more subject matter expert's quite often disagree on the direction, speed, path, or behavior of objects we must visualize. The "art" of how to seek agreement on such issues is difficult to teach in an ID program.
