I am shocked by the childish, knee-jerk reactions posted thus far in reply to Steve Tripp's paper. Congratulations to Steve for having the courage and tenacity to address in a serious and thoroughgoing manner an extremely important (and perhaps the only really significant) theoretical issue in research on teaching with and learning from media. It is an issue that cannot and should not be dismissed as irrelevant by cute metaphorical elaborations of those who find difficult or complex issues too unsettling to investigate (or the misguided assertions of their former teachers too authoritative to challenge). Research on this question has barely begun, and will eventually show the superiority of print over electronic media.
