[referring to Sawyer, 28 Feb 97] I love Living Books. There is no doubt that they are affective. My point is that if the designers knew a little about instructional design they could be both affectively appealing and instructionally effective. They could teach children to read while at the same time increasing their motivation to read. Because the designers either did not know, or did not use, design principles which promote learning to read as well as "You really oughtta wanna read," they missed an opportunity. Furthermore, including design that promotes reading would have cost no more than what was already spent.
