Rob Foshay [3 Mar 97.d] has referred to the possible role that ISO standards could play in the improvement of the quality of instruction. The Z1.11 guidelines have been written specifically for organizations and auditors who want to apply the more general quality standards of the ISO 9000 series to the area of training design, development, and implementation. The international family of quality standards (ISO 9000) specifies commonalty accepted quality systems elements to provide quality assurance while Z1.11 provides guidance in applying the ISO quality assurance model in education and training.
Instructional designers who have reviewed drafts of the Z1.11 guidelines have supported its guidance and find it useful for contracting with governmental agencies and organizations who are registered to the ISO quality standards.
Z1.11 can be obtained from the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC) (at 1-800-248-1946) and is listed in the ASQC inventory as item # T74. The Title is: Quality Assurance Standards--Guidelines for the Application of ANSI/ISO/ASQC Q9001 or Q9002 to Education and Training Institutions. The ASQC member price is $27 and non-member price is $30.
