Lloyd's [Rieber, 25 Feb 97] mention of Just Grandma and Me as an example of good design frightens me a little. It is great entertainment. I have lots of grandchildren and they love these Living Books. They play with them for hours. Very engaging. However, not one of them has learned to read from these books. Some minor changes in the design to engage users in the reading rather than merely in the fun would significantly improve these products. I do think they are an example of the kind of inadequate instructional design that Rob references in his paper.
