Faced with blank faces and inscrutable looks from long suffering students, I have often had to activate a mental sprinkler system to cool my neurons down while steam escaped out of every facial orifice. Cooled down, and soothed with introspection, my neurons informed me that it was not my students' fault that they could not understand me. As the prime mover in the communication process, I (the teacher) was responsible for structuring my message in such a way that it could be PROCESSED. I realized that there is a difference between communication and reflection.

As an instructional designer, I sometime have to impress upon the content experts I work with that it is their professional responsibility (and their organizational duty) to ensure that their message is understood. I can assist them with the communication process but not with esoteric introspection. I wish I could contribute to this debate, but despite a perfect e-mail link, the message is just not getting through.
