This discussion assumes that CAI will or should replace an entire course that was previously a traditional instructor-led lecture course, as best as I can tell. It is time to critically examine this assumption. It is possible to think of CAI as computer-augmented instruction, in which case traditional courses can undergo minor and gradual evolution, making cost-effective and educationally effective use of new technologies. Wholesale replacement of traditional courses with CAI has generally proven to be expensive and of marginal benefit. Gradually incorporating computer-augmented methodologies into the classroom may prove more beneficial, less costly, and may really empower instructors, something about which we hear a great deal of discussion and not much else. Can we not introduce advanced technologies more gracefully???
