Project Management

Seminar date/time: November 23, 1999, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Location: Room 615

Seminar Description

This seminar will examine factors related to successfully managing instructional design/development projects. Both the technical and human sides of management will be considered and illustrated with examples.

This seminar will be presented by Kent Gustafson.

Seminar Preparation

Please read the following scenario and come prepared to discuss the factors you will need to consider in dealing with this situation. Do NOT concentrate on finding the right answer; there is none. Rather, think about what options you might have and the possible consequences of any actions you might take.

Scenario:
You are managing an interactive multimedia development project that is particularly dependent on the artistic and computer "authoring" skills of one individual. The project is well into the production stage at this point.

This person is being paid a reasonably competitive, but not high, salary for the work being done. Without the person's major contribution, the project will suffer significant delay as a replacement is brought in and gets up to speed.

The individual has requested an appointment to see you. Upon arrival the person informs you that another company has made an "attractive salary" offer and wants her to start work there in two weeks, or immediately if you will release her. (Your company does have a two week notification policy.)
